Disorder Urban-scape Connectors And Conformity Mechanism

Based on the study of theories and practice of Chinese and Western urban-scape connectors, this thesis focuses on the disorder urban-scape connectors in contemporary Chinese cities, analyzing these problems with urban-design theories in the large-scale urbanization and exploring the conformity mechanism of their solution. As vital parts of the urban-scape system, urban-scape connectors are keys linking other parts of public spaces in urban environments. In the specific evolution periods in Chinese cities, however, the urban-scape connectors are rather worrying, facing the impacts both from historical carry-over in the past and from western urban theories, esp. modernism theories. Consequently, following the rules of "theories instruct practice and practice enriches theories" and "to learn from the history", this thesis aims for finding solution and prevention methods. Personally, I believe, in the days when natural sciences bloom, the insular and rigescent methods we used to follow cannot meet all the requirements in contemporary cities; with the help of interdisciplinary and inter-field urban design, we could find more effective solution to the urban phenomenon of "disorder".This thesis is composed of six chapters. Firstly, Chapter One introduces the concept of "Urban-scape Connector" and the objectives, significances and methods of the study. Then, Chapter Two and Three retrospect the theories and practices of urban-scape connectors in the history of Chinese and Western cities, and show their positive impact on contemporary urban-scape in Chinese cities. Systematically, Chapter Four analyzes the conformity mechanism of disorder urban-scape connectors, and carries out the rules, methods and advertence. Lastly, by introducing the projects undertaken by us, Chapter Five and Six emphasize the design methods and rules mentioned previously and their application in practice.
