In order to suit the quick development of cast steel joints, the systematic researchis carried out in this paper. By analysis of the cast steel joints in structure, theproperties and classification are discussed, the design criteria are presented and theproduction technique of the joints is introduced. Based on the elastic-plastic analysistheory, the static behavior is studied of cast steel hollow spherical joints with tubeunder tension and compression by the use of nonlinear FEM.. Stress distribution, destructive model and influence of joint geometric parameters on joint strength areanalyzed. The bearing-capacity formula of the joints is also presented. Next, the stressdistribution is discussed of cast steel hollow spherical joints with tube underthree-dimension load for Chongqing Olympic stadium by using FEM. Thecomparison of the static behavior under two different load case shows that both of thestress distribution matches each other well. In addition, FEM analysis is alsoperformed to compute the stress on the cast steel tubular joints in Chongqing Olympicstadium. On the basis of the computation, the full-scale loading test on cast steel jointswith large size in Chongqing Olympic stadium is performed. By the measurement, thestress on the surface of the two cast steel joints under maximum design load areobtained. Combined the test and computation, the result shows that both of the valuesmatch each other very well, which can prove the computation right and providereliable basis for the research of cast steel joints in the future. At last, somesuggestions are presented about the further research problem of cast steel joints. Theresearch in the paper is helpful to compile code in China.
