The cast steel is to pour the melted steel into the mould and let it cold to theexpected form. After the process of heat processing, machining, welding and othercraft, the cast steel will become the final component. Cast steel has a lot of merits,such as the high strength, plasticity, ductility, welding capacity, and the free shapedform. Because of the merits, the cast steel joints are being used more wildly in thestructure of the buildings. It has an extensive developing future.The definition of cast steel and the processing of cast are introduced in this paper.The history of the cast is reviewed. The utility of cast steel joints abroad and thepresent study condition of our country in this field is introduced.The material of cast steel used in buildings is summarized. The component andthe mechanical behavior of the material is analyzed. The characteristics of cast steeljoints is discussed. And the cast joints are divided into nine types according to theirform.Based on the FEM theory of elastic-plastic material, the non-linear analysismethod (via software ANSYS) is used to compute the one-direction tensilebearing-capacity of spherical joints with tube and rib. Stress and strain distributionand destructive model are analyzed. The contribution of rib to the tensile capacity isalso considered. The tensile bearing-capacity formula of the joint is also presented.The 50m-spiral cast steel tower is taken as an example. By using the ANSYS thecalculation is done, such as the stress, model, reaction under earthquake and thestability under wind load. The destructive model of the tower is determined. Thewelding craft of thick cast plate and the construction of the tower is introduced. Thenew techniques used in the project are concluded.The spindle of new style cable-stayed bridge and giant wheel is to be made ofcast steel. There are two proposed styles: the bearing and the balance support. In thispaper, the balance support is analyzed by using FEM and Hertz function. The twoforms of cast steel spindle are compared from different viewpoint, such as machiningprecision, installation accuracy, transportation, restrain condition as well asmaintenance and replacement.
