With the steady development of the national economy, the urban population and the space expand greatly, and the activities of business become more and more frequent. At the same time, the vehicles on the urban roads have been enlarged correspondingly, which leads the traffic demand increase unpredictably. As a result, the contradiction between the supply and the demand becomes increasingly outstanding. The high travel demand during peak hours on the urban road is the main reason for urban traffic congestion and air pollution. The establishment of the travel demand management (TDM) concept changes the style in which people deal with traffic problem: Under the moderate traffic construction scale, we cannot resolve the contradiction only by expanding the road capacity, but control the amount of travel demand and reduce unreasonable travel demand to mitigate traffic congestion. Study on travel demand, especially on people's travel behavior, is an important aspect in TDM. The activity-based approach (ABA) is one of the effective ways to analyze people's travel behavior. The activity-based behavioral analysis mainly study on people's travel behavior characteristics and the choice characteristics. It's the decision characteristics of the individual or family on activity and travel. Through these researches, we can well understand travel demand deriving from activity demand, people facing the constraint of the time and space, the life style influencing people's decisions, and the travel decisions influencing each other dynamicly and mutually under variable conditions. The former trip-based research methods have some shortcomings in these aspects. They hadn't focused on the individual or family's whole day activity chain and the related psychal factors when they make decisions, but on each trip separately.Under the circumstances of the advanced social economy, we should combine the characteristic analysis in the unit of individuals with the travel demand forecasting analysis in study areas organically. Consequently, we can analyze people's travel choice decisions, establish the activity-based travel choice models, study the variability of the travel demand objectively, and forecast the distributional regularity from time and space aspects reasonably. In conclusion, we can provide some decision bases for transportation management department in transportation planning, in policy establishment, and in policy sensitive analysis. So that it can decrease the congestion and improve the environmental quality.Considering these aspects, and based on the Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education (RFDP), the activity-based disaggregate model, we start the activity-based researches. The framework of this paper is:Firstly, we describe the activity-based travel demand theories, and introduce the related concepts on activity chain and all aspects in activity-based theories briefly. Then we analyze the disaggregate model more penetrating through studying on the activity chain model system abroad thoroughly. And then we calibrate the model by using the Logistic regression method. Then next, we analyze people's travel characteristics in the traditional way. At the same time, we analyze people's travel behavior correspondingly by using activity knowledge. In the end, we establish the models, and explain the effects of each factor on residential activities by doing some related influencing analysis. The main content and what we do in this paper are as the following:1. The activity chain methods are described in detail, and the most important parts in the activity methods are illustrated, such as the primary activity, the secondary activity, and the tour.2. Referring the research on activity chain in other countries, each model system is analyzed deeply. Then, the MNL models are introduced and the Logistic regression models are established.3. The process of the model calibration and examination is given in detail, and each activity pattern analyzed thoroughly by using related models. 4. T...
