Heptfluoride Propane (FM-200) gaseous fire extinguishing agent is efficient to put out fire and it is environment friendly. More and more important places in China need to be protected by FM-200 fire extinguishing system. The paper presents the development tendency and applying characteristics of FM-200 gaseous agent and the system. With the references to the gaseous agents listed by international standard ISO/CD/14520 Gaseous Fire-extinguishing Systems - Physical Properties and System Design as well as NFPA-2001 (2000) Standards on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems, and based on the requirements of our current national fire codes as well as the comprehensive analysis of the fire extinguishing mechanism, fire-fighting efficiency and design calculation of FM-200 agent, the paper draws a conclusion that FM-200 gaseous agent is the best choice for fire protection both at home and abroad. The toxicities of various gaseous agents applied to the important places of industrial and civil buildings as well as the harm of decomposition product to the people during the course of fire suppression have been analyzed. It also puts forward the requirements of the protected areas for the enclosure elements.Under the conditions that halon fire extinguishing agent and system have been prohibited to use at home and abroad, and based on the analysis of the properties and patterns of FM-200 agent and the fixed fire extinguishing system as well as the design calculation of unit-independent system and the combined distribution system, the reasonable design quantity of the system fire extinguishing agent has been defined.In the light of the engineering practice and based on the discussion of the design concentration and the distribution patterns of the system pipe networks of FM-200 gaseous fire extinguishing system, the conditions and requirements for consideration in the engineering design have been analyzed. The data of the study can be taken as references by design and some other units, and at the same time, some data can be used to prepare and revise the related codes and standards.
