Nowadays many problems such as too long and uncertain goods transportation time caused by the untimely transfer of goods information has hurt the image of the rail freight. And to decide the competent transportation price by certain analysis of goods stream and certain calculation of transportation cost,it is of great urgency to improve the construction of rail information and strengthen the application of EDI and EC in rail transportation. This paper is composed of three parts. In the first part, the basic knowledge and architecture of XML are given. As a new network data standard,XML will play a fundmental role in EDI and EC in the future. So the following parts will based on this part.In the second part, a distributed XML/EDI model is proposed. Its basic idea lies in coordinating the content of EDI with its architecture by introducing XML.The details of the model are also discussed, for example, the design of RFDML, the establishment of messages, the security policies of the model, the compress of the messages. In the third part, the model proposed in the second part are introduced into the railroad freight, and the prototype system are designed and programmed. The main modules including the messasges build and management module, the security module, the data compressing module, the communication module and the connective module, which are respectively implemented in TMIS freight EDI server and enterprise EDI system. The result from running in the campus network showed that the design based on the distributed XML/EDI model has such characters as low price perspicuous structure and better extensibility,so the model has a certain application and reference value in reality.
