Ertan arch dam is the typical module of high hyperbolic arch dam, whose design method and technique has been widely used in the construction of large-scale hydraulic power plants recently. Since 1998, the beginning of the impounding, many types of prototype measurements have been employed and many valued data has been accumulated. By analyzing the inner rules of these data, the practical behavior of dam can be understood more deeply, which is important to guide the normal operation of the dam and valuable to improve the design of the dam.In this thesis, the space-time distribution regulation of dam body temperature is first studied by analyzing the results of temperature prototype measurements in the early period of impounding, factors that affect the dam body temperature are especially discussed, such as atmosphere temperature and process of impounding. Second, based on these measurement results of temperature, the temperature field of the whole dam is developed with the 3D finite element method (FEM), therefore the temperature distribution regulation in the radial way of arch dam is analyzed, and Tm (average profile temperature) and Td (linear temperature difference) at different attitudes are provided. Third, based on the temperature field below, a 3D finite element method model including dam and foundation is developed to calculate the temperature strain and stress by temperature load at four typical times: before the impounding, the first high temperature period after impounding, the first low temperature period after impounding, the second high temperature period after impounding. Finally, by adjusting the parameters of dam and foundation material in the 3D FEM model, the effects of material parameters to strain and stress field is especially studied.
