Ideology of the structure optimization originated early in the 1950s or 1960s, when the invention of the eletro-computer, the limited elements analysis method and mathematics programming provided the conditions for the developing of the structure optimization design. At the same time, aviation and spaceflight industry pressed for the light quality design of the structure. Since then, the western developed countries carried out in succession the studies on the basic theory and methods of the structure optimization. After development of several decades, not only many achievements on the theory study are reached, but a series of program systems facing the engineering field are exploited. Now they are applied widely in the design of many large-scale and pivotal structures, such as aviation, spaceflight, automobile, offing project, bridge, nucleus establishment, high construction, etc. Along with it the difficulty of the theory investigation is increasing continuously and correlation learning intercommunions are came off frequently. The study contents are varied during the period from early days to today, from the optimization development orderliness of pole system size to the type optimization and geometric shape of continuum structure, from confirmed structure to the optimization design based on the reliability, from aiming grandly at the materials that are isotropic to aiming at the complex materials that are have microstructure anisotropy. At present, there is a new method that ties the structure optimization design, the limited elements analysis method, CAD(computer assistant design) and the expert system in to conformation compositive computer assistant system. In this way, making use of the advantages of the hardware and software of computer, the structure optimization can be applied in more structure designs.The engineering structure optimization study in our country was originated in 1970's. Although the history is not long, the scholar grasped the advanced direction in international and in last twenty years they have obtained many harvests. They are contributed to the establishment and management of structure optimization model, to the probing into the reasonability of the structure optimization model, and to the application , improvement, development law of the engineering structure system optimization and the applied optimization method. Some parts of these pursuits reaches the world advance level and are legalized and applied widely by the international academe. Furthermore, somestudy achievements corrected the faults that kept existing for a long time, accordingly become the advant-courier works for the expansion of new field. The basic theory investigation, program system exploitation and project application that have carried out at home provide massiness foundations for the development of the large-scale complex project structure. Nevertheless, large potential contented in the structure optimization hasn't been exerted fully because of many factors. For example, engineer don't know well the theories and methods of structure optimization design; the exiting statutes and custom are lack of power in seeking optimization design scheme; actual structure optimization method can't fully meet the requirements of the design criterion and rule and there is a certain distance between the level of investigation and the expected level. There are a series of basic problems, theories and methods in the structure optimization needed to study. The closer combination is required between the work of structure optimization and the design of the project complex system structure.These days, all the structure optimization proposed in the world are the optimization design of monocase structure. In fact, there are many structures in one project as usual, which form a project complex system structure though some relationships among them.
