The relationship between urban development and housing construction can be described as both stimulating and restricting with each other. This relationship is the theoretical basis of directing the planning and designing of urban residential space, and the important problem for the cities in our country which are building a great deal of housing at present. In the visual angle of urban spatial structure, the thesis synthetically discusses the relationship between urban development and housing construction from the macroscopical and the microcosmic levels. In addition, the thesis thinks over the question personally about the planning and designing of urban residential space.The thesis is separated into 5 chapters. The 1st chapter analyses the urban development and the housing construction briefly in the visual angle of urban spatial structure, and has a pilot study about the relationship between the two aspects. This part erects the clue for the discuss subsequently. The 2nd-4th chapter analyses the macroscopical representation, the microcosmic representation and the inherent mechanism of the relationship through the study of compare the west cities practice with our cities'. Then in the 5th chapter, based on the research of last chapters and many city cases, the thesis opens out the essential principals and policies about establishing good relationship between urban development and housing construction.As the experiences of the cities in history, whether the harmony between urban development and housing construction is established had usually decided the continuous prosperity of the cities. Consequently, creating the good relationship between urban development and housing construction of themselves is most important for today's cities trying to achieve the sustainable development.
