| The development of small towns is the important part of the Chinese country urbanization. The economy and the industrialization of Jiangsu Province are in lead in China, as well as the small towns' construction and development. But, small towns are confronted with problems such as the worsening of the ecologic environment, the missing of the historic culture, and the loss of characteristic, when they are accelerated by the improvement of the economy and the industrialization level. Therefore, the planning and design of small towns should use new methods and ideas that are based on the best livable space to guide and accelerate the development of Chinese small towns scientifically and healthily.The author adopts the method of linking theory with practice and expounds the idea of the best livable small towns to study the planning and design of small towns that are facing problems such as the back of human settlement, the ruin of the ecologic environment, the shortage of the force of sustainable development, and the reducing of the historic culture, choosing Haiyu Town as a typical case.The paper is made up of six parts. The preface clarifies the research background, actuality and the study content, intention, methods. The second chapter starts with the analysis of the correlative concepts and sums up the connotations, the key elements and the evaluation standards of best livable small towns, and the general background and feature of small towns' development in Jiangsu Province. The third chapter studies the ideas of human settlements construction exiting in the ancient China, in the modern western countries and in the modern China. The forth chapter analyzes the problems existing in the traditional design methods of Chinese small towns. The fifth chapter is the core of the thesis, which introduces new methods and ideas in the small towns' planning and design from the four aspects of the ecologic sustainable development, the characteristic of small towns, the protection and renewal of small towns, and the Science of Human Settlements, and probes the emergency measure of the planning in view of the problems and contradictions in the practice, using some concrete examples. The conclusion advances some planning and design ideas to improve of the standards of small towns' human settlements on the base of the preceding chapters. |
