Since the 1990s, there are more and more large-scale real estate redevelopment projects in the old city of Beijing. This has led to the demolishing of the original historic cultural environment. The integrated structure and traditional feature of the old city are experiencing serious threat. Along with what has been known more about the historic conservation by people, in the process of urban high-speed development, how to put forward the active measures and how to appropriately handle the relation of the conservation of historic city and modernization are have become a very urgent problem that urban planning workers must study hard. Above is the background of this thesis.First, from spatial angle, through the analysis from the macro view to the tiny view in multiple layers, the thesis clarifies that it is the only way to regard traditional courtyard space as foundation, going deep into the texture allover the old city, then the integrated structure and feature of the old city can be conserved effectively. After that, from the view of functional orientation, from two aspects of the macro view and the tiny view, thesis discusses respectively the necessity and the feasibility of nonresidential modernization pattern application in traditional courtyard space.Chapter three firstly summarizes some problems of residential modernization pattern application in traditional courtyard space. Then thesis analyses the present examples of nonresidential functions in traditional courtyard space of Beijing. And the thesis considers studying the related problems, which is derivation of the examples, pointing out the modernization redevelopment of nonresidential functions in "new courtyard" should get the appropriate expansion in the district that is not conservation districts of historic sites. Chapter four includes a comparison in space characteristic between "new courtyard" and traditional courtyard and the summarization and the thought of all kinds of way of redevelopment in the view of urban synthetic context, searching for the right way and method for the conservation and development of the old city. Chapter five is thorough research and analysis on the modernization patterns of nonresidential functions in traditional courtyard space, including analysis from the macro view to the tiny view in multiple layers,various modernization pattern for food, business and office and the research of the related problems Chapter six of the thesis is case examples. Combining with theory, the thesis makes thorough and scientific research on urban planning of Ping'an Ages Square and urban design of Chaofu Avenue. Furthermore the thesis discusses the modernization patterns of nonresidential functions in traditional courtyard space from two dimensions of macro view and tiny view.
