The staggered truss system is a new concept in structural steel framing for high-rise buildings. The system consists of a series of story-high trusses spanning the total width between two rows of exterior columns and arranged in a staggered pattern on adjacent column lines. The system was developed to achieve a more efficient structural frame to resist lateral loads and at the same time provide versatility of floor layout with large column-free areas. It has been applied abroad more and more widely in recent years. Whereas at home there little study has been done on this system .The paper, referring to foreign codes, carried out seismic study on Staggered truss frame system by means of FEM-program ETABS, and drew a series of conclusions for its rational structural design. The paper carried out elastic response spectrum analysis on Staggered truss frame system, and two strong ground motion records were selected to carry out elastic time-history analysis. The paper grouped 21 models according to their height to width ratio, building height, truss aspect ratio, vierendeel length and truss type etc., and made a series of comparisons between these models. The paper also carried out Nonlinear Static Analysis (Push-over analysis) on 2 vierendeel truss models and 3 composite truss model. Referring to the Chinese code and the America code FEMA273, the results suggested that the performance of all these buildings is within the range of "damage control" under the condition of seismic fortification intensity of 8 (0.2g), with soil type 3.
