Since 1999, the West Lake scenic area is experiencing a new constructiveperiod, constructive works were spread widely than ever. Great economic andsocial benefits were achieved. However, behind the achievements, there arestill many serious problems, which is worth concerning about. For understanding and evaluating the construction of this period furtherand more scientific and comprehensive, and summing up the experience andlessons, the thesis not only analyses the whole constructive works in the WestLake science 1999 systematically, and reviews the development of this scenicarea from 1949 to 1999 briefly, but also compare the studies these two periodscomparatively. The West Lake is always the significant basic of the development ofHangzhou, at the same time, the growth of the scenic area is confined by theexpansion of the city. With the maturing of market economy, the competitionbetween cities becomes more and more fierce, the challenge Hangzhou faced isaustere than ever. As the starting point of the new period of development ofthe city, the construction of the West Lake is under the far-reaching impact ofthe modernism, urbanization, industrialization. From the view of developmentof the city, it will be easier to approach to the main issues, which trouble theWest Lake region these years, and find out the real causes behind these issues. Now the West Lake scenic area is on the way of nominating for listing asa World Cultural Heritage site, the perspective is not optimistic. The thesisalso try to analyses the advantage and disadvantage of the West Lake, and thepoint of view is given whether such a lager scale construction will be ofbenefit to the nomination or not.
