Urban Color Identity System

China is now undergoing a process of large-scale urbanization in which big cities outspread quickly and numerous middle and small towns come into being with a consequence of a governmental emphasis on city planning and city constructing. In the city constructing, how to highlight city image and boost city identity are hot issues highly concerned by academia and government sections nowadays. Under such social background, the establishment of City Identity System, this has "brand effect" and which is beneficial to economy cultivating and to promoting a comprehensive development of city land value, is a new solution. Meanwhile, city color makes an important perceivable factor that is indispensable in the city CI system. This paper takes urban color as research object while studying urban color issue from city CI System perspective, exploring the composition and the effective operation of urban color identity system as well as pointing out the significance of urban color identification to the whole city identification and its close relationship to city life.The paper comprises five parts:Chapter 1 makes clear the research background and purpose of urban color identity system. Some related fields and basic applied theories will be expounded on.Chapter 2 recalls the evolution and findings of urban color research. Also, an introduction of domestic urban color planning and present situation will be given.Chapter 3 uses the archeological theory of "culture accumulation" and "culture stratum" as reference to conduct a thorough theoretical analysis and to discourse the future application of "culture accumulation" theory in the fields of urban color planning.Chapter 4 details the composition of city color identification system: culture symbolic color of city, urban overall color and urban interfacial color, together with respective description of each part's traits and correlated influential factors.Chapter 5 introduces two cases of urban color planning: one is "the urban color identity system planning for Nanyang city" and the other "color control for corridor landscaping of Pingdingshan's new town". The two cases demonstrate the operation process and research method for urban color identity system from macro- and micro-level respectively.
