The urban population is both increasing and flowing continuously and meanwhile the citizen is differed into variant social stratums during the rapid transitional period in contemporary china. With the high development of urbanization, urban space is changing rapidly, which makes the former urban space order to be broken, and a totally new one to be established. As we can see, the phenomenon of urban residential space differentiation which hided in the division of the material space and the social space, goes far beyond the economic status differentiation now, and the social stratum insulation is more obvious than any other period before.Against those backgrounds, the author takes the regulating strategy of urban residential space differentiation as a way to integrate the differentiation of social stratum, and tries to find a leading countermeasure to alleviate the negative effects of the excessive social differentiation in a certain degree, and finally to promote our society to develop stably, harmoniously, and healthily. From the view of city geography, joining with the related theories of urban planning and urban sociology, adopting the gradualness method, the author first anatomizes the reasons the formation of urban residential space differentiation theoretically, then analyses the mechanism, regulation and trend of it, finally puts forward several valid techniques of urban planning to guide the layout of urban residential space, and discusses the institutional environment that goes with the techniques. All in all, to serve for today's work of urban planning and construction, the author tries hard to provide a theoretic basis for the formulation of the urban macroscopic policy and urban planning management and design. Therefore, it provides a guide for the future work to improve the current layout of urban residential space by alleviating the negative effects of urban residential space differentiation to the lowest as possibly.
