The assessment of reservoir benefit when its limited elevation is controlled dynamically during the flood season is studied in this paper. The paper consists of four parts: the study on the making of reservoir operation graph, the research on methods to calculate reservoir benefit, the assessment of reservoir benefit when its limited elevation is controlled dynamically, and the design and development of benefit assessment software. The major contents and research results are as follows:(1) In the first part, the making of reservoir operation graph based on long-term runoff serials is studied. The method takes the characteristics of long-term runoff and reservoir task, as well as reliability index into account to make sure the operation graph reflects the real nature of reservoir and gives detailed assessment of reservoir's failure states. This method acts in an interactive way, by which, the experiences of reservoir administrators can be taken into account. Compared with the optimization methods, this one shows excellent practicability and flexibility.(2) In the second part, methods on how to calculate reservoir benefit are studied. The affect of different methods on benefit mainly caused by the difference of operation way in flood season, so in this part, the reservoir operation stages in flood season are divided into three group according to reservoir state, to every single stage, the difference between methods is analyzed from different aspects, such as runoff, reservoir task, water level and release, etc to decide to what extent the methods influence the benefit calculation.(3) The third part is about the benefit assessment of Baiguishan reservoir and Shenwo reservoir when their limited elevation is controlled dynamically. To do so, operation graph need to be remade to meet the requirement of this dynamic way, and proper calculation method need to be decided according to the nature of different reservoir. The result of the two reservoirs shows that the two can increase the water supply ability at no suffers of their reliability by controlled dynamically the limited elevation in flood season.(4) The forth part is about the design and development of benefit assessment software. The system function, system structure, system flow, database design, user interface design and key technologies used during development are studied in this part. This software proves to be practical, easy-to-use, portable and extensible.
