Taihu Basin is rich in precipitation. But it is lack of water resources supply in comparison with the increasing water demand due to the rapid economic development. Meanwhile, the water scarcity aroused by the poor water quality is becoming serious because the waste water is increasing rapidly with the rapid development of industry and the capacity of waste water treatment is not improved parallelly. The object of the project of Diverting Water from the Yangtze River to Taihu lake is to increase the water supply in Taihu Basin to ease up the water crisis, to ensure the safety of people's demand for water and to improve the water environment to a certain extent.In this thesis, the analysis of the water supply and demand in Taihu Basin is made, which may serve to decide the rational amount of water diverted from Yangtze River. Also, the analysis of the water quality is conducted, in order to find out the reasonable method for evaluation of the water quality. Further, the analysis of the relation between the amount of the water diverted in and the water quality improvement is conducted on the basis of the experiment of water regulation which was carried out in 2002 and 2003, for optimization of the water distribution with the safety in flood control in the area.The result shows it is the best way to distribute the water diverted from Yangtse River into the east and west areas of Wangyu River as well as in Taihu Lake according to the relation between the amount of the water diverted in and the water quality improvement. By the project of Diverting Water from the Yangtze River to Taihu Basin, only the drinking water demand of the people in Taihu Basin, but not all water demands in various ssectors may be garenteed, and the water quality in Taihu lake may be to some extent improved, but this project is not able to improve the water quality of the whole Taihu Basin to II -III grades due to the limited capacity of diverting water in Changshu bump. Only if upgrade the technology of treating waste water and utilize the water resources more efficiently, the problems of water quality and water deficiency can be solved completely.
