Dazhalan area in the old city of Beijing is an important part of Conservation District of Beijing, which has radiant history but now is on the decline. Reviving Dazhalan area is significant in the aspects of culture, economy and society. This paper adopts transdisciplinary research that includes comprehensive analysis on several related aspects, searching for effective ways to revive Dazhalan area. First of all, it has a brief introduction about the evolution of the street form of Dazhalan area, considering it indispensable to conserve local path net, Hutong-yard form, street scale adapting to pedestrian, and traditional appearance. Next, it summaries 4 main types of cultures that Dazhalan area has seen. These 4 types are Xuannan culture, commercial culture, Beijing Opera culture and political culture. These 4 types interact to each other. In addition, it probes into the weakness which is the decline tendency and strength which is harmony and vigor in this area. It inquires into the probability of reviving these 4 types of culture in contemporary time. To revive culture and tradition, we, firstly, should conserve this area, then take considerate measure, renew infrastructure, and improve the environmental quality. At the same time, it is necessary to introduce new activities, ceremonies and economic elements that are suitable to contemporary character and meet the need of resident. And on the condition of conservation, we are supposed to produce positive space that compares with these activities. Finally, the paper summarizes the ways to revive culture and rehabilitate environment in Dazhalan area into 6 aspects.
