With the country history of 5000 years, China has numerous cultural treasures. The traditional Chinese cities are considered to be the represent of the traditional Chinese culture. At present, as the development of the economy of the country, the cityscape is changed rapidly. The heritages of the old cities are disappearing and the old cities are losing their own features. The conservation and the renewal of the historic sites in old cities are becoming a serious issue. This research focuses on the Hutong-Siheyuan areas in old city of Beijing which is considered to be the classic example of the traditional Chinese city planning theory. Base on the overall understanding of the Hutong-Siheyua area, the research expects the development trend in the future and concludes the principles and the method of the conservation and renewal. Meanwhile, the research take Qianmen east district as an example, explore the way to keep the sustainable development in Hutong-siheyua area. There are 4 parts of the research:The old city in Beijing and the Hutong-siheyuan area: the historic development and the present condition of the old city in Beijing are concluded at first of this part. Then expect the development trend in the future.The sustainable development of the Hutong-Siheyuan area: the meaning of sustainable development is explained at first and the conception which the Hutong-Siheyuan district is a sustainable cityscape is confirmed.The conservation and renovation principles and the methods of the Hutong-Siheyuan area are concluded.The conservation and renovation plan for Qianmen east district which including the aims of the plan, the conservation of the original form of the district, the conservation and renovation of the courtyard and garden spaces, the renovation of the old watercourse of Sanlihe and the renovation of the plate feature.
