Based on the comprehensive analysis of the present soil reinforcement and research on microstructure especially the research on the status quo of laterite, the thesis puts forward taking the consolidation traits of Kunming laterite and quantification of microstructure pictures as the objects for research, which aims at the questions existing in the research of laterite.On the basis of making it clear that laterization includes such three integrated stages as weathering, micro-granularity and soil formation of laterite, the thesis illuminates characteristics of Kunming laterite in chemical composition, physical mechanics, composition of granules, fractal dimension of granularity and the connection of granules. The experiment using soil reinforced agent to solidify the laterite shows that the mechanical traits of laterite have been improved because of its involvement, the best compact indicators and shear strength ones increased and the indicators of laterite's penetrability and compression decreased. The effects of reinforcement can be weighed through its coefficient and the mechanism of reinforcement can find the explanation in the effect of soil reinforced agent on the laterite granules, the changes in the electric double layer caused by soil reinforced agent and its enwrapping of laterite granules.The soil's characteristics of macro-physical mechanics depend on the shapes of its microstructures, so the research on the microstructure of soil especially the quantitative research can help to explain the macro-traits of soil. By using the advanced technology of processing computerized pictures, on the basis of eight processing steps such as revising the geometrical distortion of soil's microstructure pictures, noise removal, tonal processing, correction of histogram, transformation of pictures, pictures' sharpening, partial strengthening as well as division of pictures, we can get the characteristic coefficients reflecting the shape and texture of soil's microstructure images and the quantitative ones of fractal dimension traits and orientation degree etc.The laterite's special nature of physical mechanics is the real reflection of its microstructure form. According to the eight steps of dealing with the microstructure pictures of soil and combination with the laterite's characteristics of its own, the computation procedures are formulated by use of Vb and seven characteristic coefficients are extracted. They are the area proportion, the largest area, the average perimeter, degrees of roundness, complexity and direction and value of fractal dimension of laterite's granules and holes. These 7 characteristic coefficientsreflect the composition of granules and holes of laterite. The result of quantitative analysis shows that under the different magnified multiples, the typical laterite mentioned in the paper has larger room held by granules than by holes; the degree of granules close to roundness is better than that of holes and the same is true of the direction of granules' array than holes; the complexity of array lower and value of fractal dimension larger than holes. These conclusions accord with the results got from the direct quantitative analysis of the laterite's microstructure pictures. To a certain extent, it proves the rationality and reliability of getting the characteristic coefficients by processing the microstructure pictures of laterite, and which has established the basis of uniformity about the macro- and micro- quantitative research on laterite.
