Along with the power energy saving and accurate control are taken into the consideration, the AC motor variable speed technology has been an important part of the industrial production. Reliability and costs become the most important issue in power electric technology. Then it is necessary to work on selection, protection and operating condition of semiconductors. This paper will put emphasis upon three-level (NPC: Neutral Point Clamped) inverter. Based on PSIM (Powersim) software package, the model of system was built. In terms of the results of the emulation, the method of design for three-level inverter system will be developed. At the same time, an experiment on the system was made to verify the results of the design. The main concent include: (1) the modeling for IGBT, Diode, and three-level inverter system based on PSIM software package; (2) simulation and experiment were done for every subcircuit of the inverter, and analysis was given in the paper for three-level inverter. (3) designd the driving and protecting circuit for the IGBTs. The main results include: (1) the result of the simulation is accord to the result of experiment; (2) the parameter match of the driving and protecting circuit for IGBTs, and the method for the parameter selection and circuit's design; and (3) the general design method for three-level inverters, and the experiment showed that the method is appropriate. The obtained conclusions above will provide theoretic and experimental bases for the design of three-level system series and products, and become the reference in the design and experiments for middle-voltage inverter.
