The essay summarizes the status and developing direction and the important action on the modern industry of material handling. Analyzed the status of overhead traveling crane in our country. Because internal box-main-girder overhead traveling crane' s main girder is too weight and need too material, this essay presents an optimum design method to main girder.On basis of the producing fact of Zhu Zhou Heavy Machine Ltd, the author get much fact material through inner research, aimed at the material wasted and the problems that are caused in the metals construction design and manufacture of box-main-girder overhead traveling crane, the modern design method-optimum design is adopted to box girder in the essay. While the traditional material mechanics is used in dint analysis, the finite element analysis method is used in analyzing the box girder, because of the work-conditions, over-station, and the maturity of the finite element software. According to the above reasons, two kinds of methods are adopted to optimize the box-main-girder bridge. First, the Delphi 7. 0 is used to develop the optimum design software for the box girder. The SUM-POWELL method is used in the optimum proceeds with traditional material mechanics. Second, the finite element analysis software-ANSYS is used to analyze the box girder, especially to analyze the sophisticated beam. The optimization program of the ANSYS is adopted to optimize the box girder. It' s indicated that the overhead traveling crane is highly lighted and economical after being optimized at the same condition.The essay is mainly to do some improving and exploring to modern design method of overhead traveling crane. The application of the optimal design and finite element analysis must be combined with the practice in the design of crane. The result needs analyzing and modifying necessarily because of the differentworking-conditions. The new thought presented and the new study method used in this essay must edify and prompt to explore and use modern design method of our crane craft.
