The concrete faced rock-fill dam (CFRD) has been applied and developed at home and aborad widespreadly, which has already entered into the new stage with large quantitties, increase of dam height and expanding of stgructural dam material at present. However, up till now, the experience and judgment mainly still is taken as the main design basis. The engieering design mainly is carried out in acccordance with the experience of the completed project and performed based upon the analogism. Therefore, the prototype observation has outstanding significance especially for the analysis of prototype observation of CFRD that has been operated safely to the developmentt of CFRD. The prototype observation data and resultt can be regarded as the the basis of direct experience.The analysis of prototype observation result mainly adopts the statistical analysis, and carries on the computation of finite element method on the basis, finally, compares the results of statistical analysis, computation of finite element method as well as other engineering analogy. The statistical analysis mainly uses the comparing method, graphing method, statistics law of characteristic value and so on to analyze the sizes of magnitude of physical quantity, variation law, development tendency as well as dependency relation and correlative degree of various kinds of cause quantity and effect quantity. The computation of finite element method adopts the plane finite element computation and the calculating model is Duncan-Chang E-B hyperbolic curve stress-strain model. The calculating cross section selects the maximum cross section of riverbed for main observing instrument.In this paper, through the analysis of prototype observation result for Shankou CFRD and the observation result comparison with the plane finite element theoreticalcomputation and experience analogy, the operating condition of project as well as the similarities and differences with the existing design has been analyzed, which supplies a reliable basis for the design of CFRD.The analysis result indicates that the prototype observation result of Shankou CFRD basically is agreed with the result of finite element computation. The observation result reflects that the quality of dam body compaction is good. Comparing with the completed CFRD at home and abroad presently, the maximum displacement of peripheral joint and longitudinal joint of Shankou CFRD is relatively small. The water stop system is in normal condition. The observation value of the ice pressure for the face slab far is smaller than the design value, and the ice pressure will not produce the bad effect on the face slab and dam body. The permeability of bedrock on the abutments on both banks of Shankou dam is not big, and the quality of dam foundation seepage is good.
