With the further reform of design specifications using reliability method in our country and the further research on reliability method in geotechnical engineering, It is imperative for gravity retaining wall structure, which is a one of most important structure of subgrade, to design with the reliability method of retaining structures. The analyses or discussions are emphasis on the following contents.(1) The random variables in reliability design of retaining wall were discussed, and researched with relative experiment. These random variables include the unit weight of soil, internal friction angle of soil, angle of wall friction and base coefficient of friction. It has also been discussed that the calculation of reliability index and its uses in retaining wall design.(2) Functions of limited state equation of anti-slide and antioverturning in retaining wall are established. The formula and program ( "JC" Method and "M-C" Method) for reliability index calculation is obtained.(3) For the retaining wall designed by certainty method, the reliability index of anti-slide , anti-overturning of gravity retaining wall and stability of bearing capacity of foundation soil are calculated and analyzed. The factors that influence the reliability index of retaining wall, such as base friction coefficient and inclined base, are discussed. The objective reliability index of anti-slide , anti-overturning of retaining wall and stability of bearing capacity of foundation soil have been obtained.(4) Discussing on the method of establishing the partial coefficient of limit state design has been presented in this paper, after calculating of variety of gravity retaining walls, resistance and load partial coefficient have been obtained. Lastly, summarization of reliability Analysis of gravity retaining wall has been presented.
