The survey and design of high-speed railways is still a new area in our country. On the horizontal and longitudinal alignment design of rail route, neither the ready technical parameters and standards, nor design codes and regulations can be referenced at home, though some countries such as Japan, Germany and France have acquired rich experience in the location design after decades of practice and made a set of design codes and regulations for high-speed railway, these codes and regulations can not be directly mechanically applied to the survey and design of high-speed railways in our country, instead, our codes and regulations must be prepared based on the actual conditions of our country after tackling the key technical issues. According to the traffic organization mode, the target value of speed and by reference of the abroad experience in location design for high-speed railways and the research findings of science and technology tackling key projects of the national "Eighth Five-year Plan" and "Ninth Five-year Plan", this paper presents the analysis and calculation on the design standards of rail horizontal and longitudinal alignment in the railway route design of high-speed railways, proposes the relevant design parameters and standards which have been applied in the location design of the Xuzhou-Shanghai section of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railways, meanwhile, it also lays the foundations for the preparation of some relevant terms of tentative regulations for the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway design. The research findings are briefed as follows:1. Analyzing and summarizing the experiences and lessons of abroad location design of high-speed railways to guide the preparation of relevant standards for the horizontal and longitudinal alignment design of high-speed railway location design in our country.2. Analyzing the traffic characteristics of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, conducting studies and argumentations on the measures of enhancing the traffic capacity from different angles, and demonstrating the necessity and urgency to construct the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway.3. Performing studies and detailed calculations on plan design parameters and standards, such as minimum radius of circular curve, type and length of transition curve, and profile design parameters and standards, such as maximum grade, reduction of gradient, minimum length of grade section, radius of vertical curve and conditions for the overlap of vertical and circular curves and the overlap of vertical and transition curves, putting forward the relevant standards for the location design.4. Verifying the rationality and feasibility of high-speed railway location design by using the above mentioned standards and regulations through the practical examples in the locating scheme design of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway in passing by the Xuzhou terminal, Nanjing terminal, Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Changzhou and other cities.
