With the increasing shortage of the energy supply accompanying the rapid development of the national economy of China, to save energy has become a significant strategy to ensure sustainable development. Building trade, as a chief consumer of energy, is expected to carry out the task in no time. On such a background, this paper discusses the energy-saving design of high-rise buildings and its practices considering the special climatic and geographical features of Hunan Province. The contents of this study is as following:1. Background, status quo, objective, and significance of this research. It is illustrated that the energy saving is a worldwide trend and also an important measure to ensure the harmonious development of China's national economy.2. An exploration into the methods of energy-saving design of high-rise buildings in Hunan Province. Various methods and approaches of passive energy-saving design are discussed thoroughly in both aspects of master planning and individual planning, with a natural, harmonious, ecological, and intelligent approach of energy-saving design approach summed up.3. An analysis of the application and development of the materials and equipments used in the energy saving of high-rise buildings. Energy-saving methods for high-rise buildings are proposed from the non-architectural point of view.4. Exemplification of the designing practices of the author. Energy-saving methods for high-rise buildings are proposed in the aspect of practice.5. Conclusion. An overall policy for energy-saving design of high-rise buildings in Hunan Province is put forward at the technological level, and an overall approach to advance energy saving of building trade in our province is also suggested at the governmental administration level, market level and social level.Through detailed researches and exploration on methods of energy-saving design of high-rise buildings, this paper proposes an elementary theoretical framework for energy-saving design of high-rise buildings to serve the purpose of sustainable development, which is of some consulting values and provides the theoretical support for the energy-saving design of high-rise buildings in our province.
