Process planning, as a key component of enterprise management, its quality will have a direct impact on the production and growth of an enterprise. To improve competitiveness in the market requires enterprises to change their mode of management and traditional manual process planning. So it is very necessary and of great importance to develop the CAPP (Computer Added Process Planning) system that is suited to the special processing technology and management of Xuzhou Loading Machinery Factory (XLMF). First of all, the paper gives a detailed description of the fundamental concept, principle of work, mode of development, state and future development trend of CAPP. The advantages and disadvantages of CAPP system used by most designers in china are analyzed. In view of the state of the management of XLMF, the special processing technology and problems with it, the paper points out that CAPP system can satisfy the actual demand of the company. After discussing the goal to be achieved by XLMF in the use of CAPP and the key technology for its implementation, the paper comes up with the idea of developing a CAPP software system practical in use. Then the paper describes in details the planning and developing process of CAPP system of XLMF. 1. Whereas components of the company are of wide varieties, the process system is coded according to parts drawing, which avoids the conversion of code between development and manufacturing. 2. A series of databases for standard procedure languages, cutting tools, tools, equipment, gauges, working hours, machining centers, and some driving programs are created as required of the process planning of the company. Design information retrieved from the database will be automatically input in corresponding columns. When the design information required is retrieved, relevant information is also displayed automatically in the form of menus. All standard language databases in use can be modified and expanded by professionals, if necessary. 3. Technology can be programmed either with standard process languages to be retrieved or by keyboarding. Three ways of programming process card are devised in the system. A. Typical Process Process card of typical parts will be created after selecting the part category and inputting relevant dimensions. B Copy Similar Process By adopting similar process retrieval technique, not only the dependence of technicians on experience and the work strength can be reduced greatly, but also can it facilitate the standardization of process design. C The process card can be completed with information from the basic database.The process card can be completed either by direct inputs or by selecting menus that are displayed after pressing certain keys. And information on the card can be modifiedeasily. 4. Technicians are only required to design the process card, leaving other auxiliary process documents to be processed automatically by computer programs. All process documents can be retrieved and printed out after the process card is programmed. 5. When CAPP system is used to design process documents, the machining center is displayed automatically in each process step, thus changing the process information into MRPII management system and realizing the automatic conversion between CAPP and MRPII. And the CAD, CAPP and MRPII systems are successfully joined together. Finally, the functions of CAPP system are tested from the following aspects: 1. Basic Database Maintenance 2. Process Card Programming 3. Process Document Printing 4. Creating MRPII data After continued testing and improvement, the system has proved scientific, accurate and highly efficient in product development, design, process programming and manufacturing. This means that a CAPP software system, simple in operation and practical in use, has been successfully developed. Since its application, the CAPP system has received much recognition from the technicians of the company, as it freed them from complicated and repeated work, reduced their work strength and greatly improved their work efficiency and enthusiasm. Moreimportantly, the successful development of the CAPP system linked together the two major software systems: CAD and MRPII, incorporating the computer system to a unified whole. And this has also contributed to the rapid development of the company.
