In 1990s, with the driven forces of globalization and market oriented, the ecnomy and its reform were increasing developed in Shanghai, which caused in the shift of economy, culture and society from low-cost life style to high-cost life style, appearing the initial feature of "consumer society" as well as western contries. Consumption system, however, one of the most active factors in the socity, was deeply influenced the development of urban spaces and the conservation of historical & cultural areas. As a result, the conservation for historical & cultural areas can not be conducted at a physical level of format protection. Instead, it should be considered within the structure of the whole city and coordinate the relationship between protection and development.With the improving importance in economic social lives, comsumption has been already becoming significant force to form the urban space. With the differentiation on the urban space, the city is becoming the core of consumption, service and market. First of all, this essay aims to find the commonness of economic activities of urban space in historical & cultural areas based on the study of Shanghai urban comsumption regarding its spacal positions.Moreover, with the perspective of consumerism, a research of the space effect succession is going to be conducted with three samples of the Bound, Hengshan Rd & Fuxing Rd and Shanyin Rd, analyzing the driven forces of social and econimic behind the phenomenon of consumption of urban space during different phrases, especially the features of the space development of current shift of economy and society.Finally, this essay is going to address some strategies based on the aspectives of politics, market and urban planning to meet the development of the historical & cultural areas in Shanghai.
