The extremely harsh working conditions directly result in high thermal and mechanical loads in the parts of diesel engines' combustion chamber, and so due to high stress they become the most vulnerable components assembly in diesel engines. The failures such as cylinder sticking, scoring, gumming, etc, greatly limit diesel engines' durability and reliability. Therefore, a successful product must be investigated on the parts' temperature field, mechanical stress field and deformation.In this paper the development and actuality of the research of the heat transfer and thermal load in the diesel engine project were reviewed, then the thermal condition, thermal load and thermal load malfunction were defined and explained. 3-D model based of L16/24 diesel engine is established by software of PROE. The temperature field, structural stress field, thermal stress field and thermal & mechanical stress field are calculated by FEA software. Method of thermocouple to measure the temperature of the heated parts of diesel engine was used. The boundary conditions for validating the results were gotten by measuring the temperature of cylinder. In detail, the main research work was as follows:1. The basic fundamental and method of the computation of thermal load of the heated parts of diesel engine were elaborated, numerical computation by FEM were introduced.2. Regarding the L16/24 diesel engine as the research object, 3-D model based on the 2-D drawing of L16/24 diesel engine was established by software of PROE.3. The boundary conditions for FEA were elaborated.4. Define the temperature, force and contact boundary conditions of the 3-D model. The temperature field, structural stress field, thermal stress field, thermal & mechanical stress field and contact analysis were calculated by MSC software.5. Choosing a L16/24 diesel engine as the testing object, the plan for testing was put forward. Measure the temperature of the heated parts of diesel engine by thermocouple. The transient temperature of cylinder liner is measured. The reliability of the FEA is validated by the experimental results.Finally, the entire research was summed up, the expectations on future's work were given.
