Gravity dam is the most important structure in water works. In our country gravity dam hold the absolute predominance in built dam. The safety of dam not only effect benefit of project but also relate to safety of people's life and property. Thereby stress and stability's analysis of gravity dam is considered crucial. Traditional calculating methods have lower adaptability and can't meet the demand of designment. With the development of FEM theory and simulating software, FEM software's simulation to gravity dam has great engineering signality and practical value.In this paper, gravity dam is mainly analyzed static strength and sliding stability and seismal stability with Finite Elements Method and the theory of reaction spectrum analysis with Pro/Engineer and ANSYS.Firstly, according to the actual structure of gravity dam, three dimensions substance geometry model is built with Pro/Engineer.Then the solid geometry model is entered into ANSYS to do the pre-treatment of FEM. It is disassembled by hexahedron elements. SOLID65 element is applied to analyse the dam and SOLID45 element is applied to analyse the rock. Grads load is applied to imitate the gravity load the static water press and the raising pressure on gravity dam so as to make the loaded condition of gravity dam accorded with actual condition more.Secondly, static strength of gravity dam is analyzed and calculated with ANSYS to gain the stress distribution and deformed state of gravity dam. Analysis result shows: the maximal pull stress where located at the middle of top dam is less than the resist pull stress limit of concrete. The maximal press stress where located at the joint of rock and downriver dam is less than the resist press stress limit of concrete. In a word, gravity dam meets the requirement under various static loads.Finally, the sliding stability of gravity dam is analyzed on the basis of the criterion of dam design, adopt cut and friction expressions to analyse. Analysis result shows: the resist slippage safety factor of gravity dam is greater than allowable safety factor. The lowest ten natural frequencies of gravity dam is calculated by subspace means with ANSYS. The value of reaction spectrum of natural frequencies is calculated by standard reaction spectrum. After spectrum analysis model expansion and model combination, response is calculated. Stress and strain distribution and deformed state of gravity dam is gained by the post-treatment of ANSYS. Analysis result shows: The maximal dynamical deform of gravity dam is located at top of dam.The research for gravity dam has offered technical data for practical project. Certain foundation has been established for similar dam work with FEM analysis and dynamical analysis.
