The conception of selective assembly is defined on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of modern manufacturing environment and the new requirement in product designing and manufacture. The selective assembly is divided into two problems, the selective assembly in product designing and the selective assembly in product assembly, according to the different phases of product designing and manufacture. On the selective assembly in product designing, in order to response to the customization change of product, a parts supplier selection method is proposed, which can well adapt to various demands of different customers in modern manufacturing environment. On the selective assembly in product assembly, the mathematical model of selective assembly is established on the basis of analyzing the different construction of products. According to the particularity of this problem, a new assembly method based on improved hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed and the related issues of this algorithm are designed. In the end, an example of applying this algorithm is given to prove the feasibility and validity of this assembly method.
