The real-time control of ballast water in floating dock is researched. Mathematical models are constructed for solving the problem. A real-time control and simulation system is developed based on the models.First of all, actuality of real-time control systems used on floating docks is summarized. The significant both in theoretic and practical of the research is concluded. Then, requirement analysis of the simulation system is done based on the theory of software engineering. In addition, system framework and detailed functions of each module are confirmed. Decision-making of ballast water adjustment of floating dock is studied as a two-step optimization problem. Two mathematical models are constructed for minimizing the ballast water adjustment quantity of every tank needed and the trim of the floating dock respectively. And corresponding penalty function method for solving them is also introduced. Programs are compiled under Matlab environment in order to work out the problem. LabVIEW is chosen to be the platform for developing the simulation system after being balanced with other software. The whole framework of the system, data transmission between functional modules and detail implementation methods are introduced orderly. Matlab is called during the process of calculation for making the ballast water adjusting schedule. Calculations for real-time simulation are achieved by cooperation of Lab VIEW and Matlab. The workflow of the system is introduced by expressing an embarking procedure of a hull section onto the floating dock.Examples and corresponding analysis of results are given at processes of both arithmetic design and system conformity. The simulation system can do decision-making of ballast water for each step of floating dock work procedure and simulate the process with a visible front panel. The result shows that the optimum schedule can be made out by the proposed optimization models and arithmetic for ballast water operation and the simulation system developed is practical and applicable.
