In the last two decades, the hydroelectric industries in our country have been developed rapidly, and the rib reinforced branch pipe has been used more and more popularly than ever before. The rib reinforced branch pipe is a combination structure of steel shells and reinforced rib. It is very difficult to design and generate the finite element information of rib reinforced branch pipe for its complexity. A system for computer aided design of rib reinforced branch pipe has been compiled in this paper. The main contents include:The mathematical expressions for somatotype calculation of rib reinforced branch pipe have been established according to the geometric relationship of branch pipe, and the expressions for mesh compartmentalization and pipe expansions of rib reinforced branch pipe are also derived based on the principle of space line intersecting a plane.A system for computer aided design of rib reinforced branch pipe has been compiled by using the tools of ObjectARX2000 of AutoCAD. The system can be used to calculate the structural somatotype, thickness, initial gaps between pipes and surrounding rock of rib reinforced branch pipe, and it also has the functions to generate the finite element information and pipe expansions by the requirement of user.ObjectARX2000 AppWizard has been used to establish user's interface in order to simplify the input of parameter.The principle and method of this CAD system has been verified by using it to design an example project in this paper. The results show that the system for computer aided design of rib reinforced branch pipe can meet the engineering precision requirement satisfactorily.
