In 1973, the first petroleum crisis, which drew people's attention to keep the balance between supplement-demanding and storage, seriously encumber the development of Human Society. Solar Energy, as the abundant, healthy and unpolluted alternative, has become the first substitute, when people refer to the topic about sustainability. Hot-summer and cold-winter zone in China is a booming area with large population. It is self-evident that the improvement of the thermal environment of residential buildings in this area is of great importance. Simply applying the strategies practiced in cold north or blazing south will inevitably be trapped in a dilemma and fail to solve the opposite requirements properly. The wrong way of low-energy house design was discovered by the writer through a mass of investigations and analysis of existing problems. It is the misunderstanding of the concept of passive solar energy and the undiscovered proper strategies for the extreme climate area that are the radical reasons. So to explore the suitable design strategies for the multi-storied house design in summer-hot & winter-cold area is the key point of this thesis. Firstly, the writer trimmed the general theory of passive solar energy in her way from two directions——passive cooling and passive heating, through abundant relative literature reading. Secondly, the design strategies, which can give attention to two or more things about summer-hot and winter-cold, of several key factors, such as the sunward, the form , the space and the skin were collated on the base of the former research and experiments with the writer's thoughts and analysis on the potential and the problems which the solar energy utility is facing, However, architecture is not the simple combination of accessories, but the integration of art and technology. And so, how to keep the balance of the relationship between the summer-hot and winter-cold as well as all parts of a multi-stories house should be emphasized. Therefore, the new concept house design full of fresh ideas about the passive solar energy strategies which focus on the summer-hot and winter-cold area was born. Furthermore, from the point of solar energy utility, the strategies of passive solar energy should also pay attention to the integrated design about the active solar energy products, including to itself. The thesis also analyses the existing problems of the usage of solar energy products on urban houses in Summer-hot & Winter-cold region, such as visual pollution, and so the integrated design is advocated. The writer puts forward the countermeasures and concept designs about how to combine the active solar energy products and urban houses design together focus on the special summer-hot & winter-cold region, as well as introduce some good experiences of integrated design from foreign countries. The idea of the "Passive Solar Energy Design Strategies"comes from the research topic—Eco-design Strategies in Hot-summer and Cold-winter Area, supported by National Natural Science Foundation in China and directed by my professor. The thesis finds its origin in a responsible attention on the eco-issues in China and follows the principle from theory to practice, including the general concept, the special strategies, the concrete concept design and the further integrated design, with the coming out of some useful and operable conclusion, which are filled with eco-significance and contributes, by all means, endless resources to the architectural design and its creation.
