"Informal space" is a space formed without a clear design. It dose not adheres to the established and recognized form and order. It is a space formed due to slack or temporary absence of regulation. Its essence is the "informal" of behavior. This thesis classify it as commercial type and residential type.Commercial informal spaces occupy public space in a temporary and flexible way. After a large number of such space gather,“street market space” is formed.Commercial informal spaces generally appear in countries around the world, and historic conservation area are also typical carriers of this type of space in Chinese.Since the abolition of the Lifang system in the Northern Song Dynasty, such space have frequently appeared and have had a positive impact on urban economy and spatial vitality, while increasing spatial diversity. However, there are still many deficiencies in the understanding of informal spaces at present. In the past, the exclusive renewal of historic conservation area has continuously eliminated such spaces, resulting in the gradual lack of authenticity of life, vitality, and diversity in the blocks. This thesis research street and alleys space from the perspective of commercial informal space and takes historic conservation as the carrier, and chooses the self-built Shangxi-Xiaxi Street and the top-down renewed Wenming Street historic conservation area for comparison using the field research and the contrastive research method.First, compare the basic status quo,the subject characteristics and distribution characteristics of informal spaces at the block level.Second,at the level of streets and lanes,it compares the characteristics of space and activities under the influence of informal spaces to explore the relationship between informal spaces and street activities in the two types of blocks. Then, use spatial politics theory to explain the changes of commercial informal spaces in urban renewal. Finally,it proposes a path to govern the commercial informal space to achieve the goal of symbiosis of the street and the market.Through the comparison of the two types of blocks, the research hold the view that top-down definitions of discourse, spatial exclusion, and bottom-up behavior "informal" are the root of commercial informal spaces. This research puts forward the governance principle of "informal space" based on the "interaction of three types of subjects",and that "informal space" can be transformed into "formal space" through system design, refined operator management and space guidance strategies, and that a management path of “access-permission-implementationsupervision” is formed, which can provide reference for the informal space governance of historic conservation area similar to Shangxi-Xiaxi Street historic conservation area.
