Panel die is one of important technologic equipments in automotive body manufacturing. The design and manufacturing time and the quality of panel dies have direct effects on the development period, quality and competitive capability of new cars. Panel die is comprised of many parts, including plenty of standard parts not only contain general standard parts for mechanical industry such as bolt, screw, spring but also contain special standard parts for panel die such as pin, guideboard, limitator, endhead. Efficient design of these standard parts can reduce the repeated work, save design time, decrease the cost and improve the design and manufacturing of panel dies. The research and development of standard parts have been done for several years at home and abroad and many successes have been achieved. But it is not enough. So authors do the research and development of Knowledge-Based standard part library for panel dies. According to the structural characteristics and assembly demand, authors summarize and sort the knowledge about design of panel dies and standard parts. After analysed the knowledge expression methods of rule-based, frame-based and OOKR (Object-Oriented Knowledge Representation), authors confirmed to describe the knowledge of panel die standard parts by using OOKR, by which we can deal with the knowledge of rule-based and frame-based. The technology of RBR (Rule-Based Reasoning), CBR (Case-Based Reasoning) and the knowledge obtaining method of die standard parts are discussed in the paper. And the memory mechanism, search mechanism and the constitution of knowledge for standard parts are researched also. After analysising methods for matching of standard parts, parametric driving and rapid assembly, the general knowledge classes are summarized. The classes are defined by useing UG/KF language associated with OOKR, and are applied to build model of standard part. Based on the theoretical research, the system frame structure and the implement process are described and a Knowledge-Based standard part library system has been developed on the UG/KF platform. The system consists of following modules, i.e. project initialization, database, the application of KBE, assembly design and detail design. At last an application example is given.
