With the progress of cultural heritage conservation and the development of the society and economy, the fire threat against historic districts and buildings has been increasing year-by-year;hence, there is an urgent demand to study the fire protection in historic districts. The dissertation discussed the conservation of cultural heritage from the fire-protecting perspective, which is not only of practical significance but also of certain academic value.The dissertation is composed of five parts. The first chapter put forward the concept of 'fire culture', which is a significant portion of the heritage conservation system and deserves to probe ,investigate ,convey and reutilize .In the second chapter ,it firstly analyzed the characters of diverse historic districts, then concluded the characters of fire in historic districts by comparing the past with the present and field working, finally investigated the causes of the fire and handicaps of the fire-fighting. In the consequence, it brought forward detailed solutions: A set of comparatively comprehensive countermeasures were advanced in the third part including building rehabilitation and renovation, planning control, fire-protecting techniques and facilities ,while a series of suggestions from the point of design ,administration and social measures in the fourth. The last part furthered explain and attest the viewpoints and conclusions mentioned above via a case.The dissertation considered that the fire protection in historic districts should be based on preserving the authentic heritages, and persist on the principle of integrating modern techniques with traditional methods, in other words, that it should be encouraged to make full use of the original fire-proofing functions as well as utilize the present-day technology .In addition, the dissertation specially lay stress on making diverse plans and social measures cooperative.All these fire-protecting theories and measures could not only be applied to historic districts, but be referred in the case of historic villages and towns.
