In recent years, gas business of the town in our country has entered a period of booming development. The construction of a great many of gas pipe network projects makes the utilization of town gas more and more widespread. However, the safety problem of town gas pipe network shouldn't be neglected. For its leak or burst always brings huge damage to the town residents' lives and properties. Besides, with the information technology advancing rapidly, the application of information technology to pipe network management has become the general trend.The paper studies fault diagnosis technology based on fruticose gas pipe network which is universal in small towns,and gives a particular description of domestic and foreign gas pipe network fault diagnosis technique based on hardware and software currently. The author uses graph theory to build up hydraulic analysis model of natural gas network and presents its solution methods. Besides, the author works out the relation between gas pipe pressure and flux in unsteady condition of fluid flow according to pressure boundary condition and differential equation group, and puts forward fault diagnosis methods and steps of the fruticose natural gas pipe network of middle pressure based on the simplification of this relation. Namely,node flux and node pressure are detected, and node flux is converted to node computing flux of standard condition. Fault of natural gas pipe network is diagnosed according to conservation law of node computing flux, and fault pipeline is sought depending on the relation of differenceεand alarm limitε0.The geographical information system (GIS) has strong function of space analysis and obvious advantages on application in search and orientation of the fault pipe section. The paper describes the composition and application to gas pipe network of GIS, and uses VB and groupware provided by MapInfo to exploit procedure of fault diagnosis system of natural gas pipe network based on GIS.The fault diagnosis system of natural gas pipe network based on GIS is composed of the basic function subsystem, comprehensive analysis subsystem and fault diagnosis subsystem. The basic function subsystem mainly realizes the management of map datasets and graph layer, as well as the map operation and edit; comprehensive analysis subsystem mainly realize inquiry and analysis of space and attributes information of the pipelines on the map; and fault diagnosis subsystem mostly carries on fault diagnosis...
