The Pattern Of The Urban Block

The thesis is a study on urban form and urban planning pattern building. It focuses on blocks and put block scale, block structure, and street width into one system.The methods of description research and direction research have been used in the thesis. Shenyang in Liaoning province of China is taken as the example of descriptive research. In the process of descriptive research, from the three points of the age background, form patterns, and form causes, the author analyzed and summarized the form patterns, and the causes of the blocks' patterns of Shenhe old urban district, Taiyuan shopping district, Tiexi industrial zone, and Hunnan new development zone which represented the urban form of feudalism period, colonized period, planned economy period and socialism market economy period respectively, then studied the time process and space characteristics of evolvement of districts mentioned above, in order to find the ideal pattern and the driven elements of the blocks' patterns. The core of the thesis is the part of the direction research which evaluated and defined the basic pattern of block scale, block structure, and street width, and a serial conclusion of blocks patterns were given in this part with the methods of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The author hopes that these conclusions will be able to be checked up, modified and run in practice, gradually. In the end, these patterns will be able to be brought into the process of urban planning and design in China, and bring positive affects on the development of Chinese cities. It is the original intention and significance of the research.
