Recent years,the disordered spread of urban area,which is called“big cakes”and the construction of large-scale closed communities in full swing have made a lot of urban issues such as land waste,traffic congestion and environmental degradation,in the rapid completing of urbanization,which lows down efficiency of cities obviously.Also,resident cannot enjoy convenience in daily lives.During current stage,cities in China have changed the situation from extension to connotation,from incremental development to stock optimization.Therefore,promoting urban compactness and residential districtization has hopefully become a way for the new urbanization.This paper is aimed to combine the compact residential area,which is supported by the Compact City theory,with the block-type residential area under the Open Block mode.The compactness measurement method is used to quantitatively simulate the suitable development intensity and block size of the residential area,in order to provide reference and recommendations to the construction of China's urban settlements.First of all,this paper sorts out and analyzes the urban theories and concepts related to “compact city” and “open block” through literature research,proposes the concept of compact block-type settlements,and summarizes compact block-type settlements from the spatial level into three design cores: high density,functional mix,enclosed street profile.On this basis,the block size,residential population density,functional mixing intensity and floor area ratio are determined as the main control indicators for the study of suitable block size and development intensity.Secondly,based on the comparison and analysis of many existing compactness,comprehensive index system measurement methods,the paper refines and optimizes based on the compact city connotation and medium-micro scale spatial form,and builds a compactness measurement index that is more suitable for the research content of this paper.Also,based on the survey and analysis of the completed residential area and the overall situation of Tianjin residential area,the spatial form and related indicators of the compact block-type residential area were limited.Then a series of variables were established according to different control index variables and model sample.Bymeasuring the compactness of each model sample,the final analysis and comparison shows the appropriate block size of the compact block-type settlement and the interval range suitable for developing the intensity-related variables.Finally,as the spatial morphological influence factors of compact block-type settlements are summarized,combined with the research results,the dilemma faced by the design of compact block-type settlements at the present stage was considered,and corresponding suggestions were put forward.
