| With the quick development of economy, the problems of traffic are becoming more and more serious in cities, and traffic facilities , the gasoline, and the land can not or will not meet our needs. Besides, the environment is becoming worse than before because of the traffic in some degree. All of these are bad for the sustainable development of our society. However, the sustainable development theory has almost never been put into practice in the urban planning field in our country. Based on the sustainable development thought, this research tries to discuss the relationship between the characteristics of area and those of its inhabitant trip, how to conciliate their relationship in order to achieve the sustainable development. This research mainly uses the method of statistical data analysis, the technique of SQL database query and the function of ArcGIS spatial network analysis. On the basis of investigating and summing up many theories and research productions relative to this field, the paper first analyses the exterior characteristics of area including the general population characteristic, the land using characteristic and the traffic facilities characteristic. Secondly, we discuss some characteristics about inhabitants, the age, the incoming, the occupation included. Thirdly, we give a detail analysis about the characteristics of inhabitant trip by one-tab and cross-tab analysis. The mode, the purpose, the distance and the intensity about trip is involved in this process. At last, we try to find the connection or disciplinarian between the area characteristics and trip characteristics, for purpose to give advice to the inhabitant trip and city planning on the sustainable development.
