The traffic safety question is a hot topic which the entire society pays attention. It is extremely important to improve the traffic safety condition through improve road design. Roadside barriers, as an effective method to protect dangerous obstacles on road, its design is reasonable or not is closely linked with the road traffic safety.The paper refers to the domestic and foreign research results, on the basis, analyzes domestic present design situation of roadside barriers, and pointes out some problems in barrier design. On this foundation, In view of problems in barrier position design, systematically analyzes factors which position design must be consider and method to define reasonable position. In view of problems in barrier length design, establishes structural design length equation according to barrier distortion characteristics, establishes functional design length equation based on vehicle traveling characteristics, the fmal outcome will be the bigger one of the two. After the formula establishment, computes traveling path length through the stress analysis, computes barrier distortion and the expiration column number through delta time trial, and then contrast the results with experiment datum to confirm their validity. At last, selects typical road section from Shaanxi-Mongolia freeway, uses the paper's conclusions to optimize roadside barrier design and confirm its rationality.
