Geographic Information System is a computer system for capturing, displaying, querying, analyzing and assistant decision-making on geographical data. It has made surprising development in the latest 40 years. GIS has been widely used in areas such as resource probe, environment evaluation, traffic safety, public facility management, etc.The selection of highway route is an important link because of many influence factors and complex technologies. It includes politics, the economy, the national defense, the technology, the environment and many other factors. It is also complex and difficult for us to select the best highway route because of all kinds of factors. But, the route plan also directly affects the quality of items of construction, the investment and the operation benefit, it also affects the road bed, the road surface and the bridges. Therefore, route selection is a very important link. The work of route selection relies on the new technical development. Go along with the development of computer technology and the applied mathematics, use mathematics method of optimized theory to seek the most superior design plan automatically by the computer. In this thesis, the basic theory of GIS is researched from many aspects such as the function of GIS.Based on GIS,obtaining the information of indexs of highway routes selection plans is researched, too. In the selection process, expanding the indexs of highway routes selection plans is studied. In addition to highway engineering standard specifications and project cost ,ecological benefit and social benefit are also considered. The basic theory of analysis hierarchy process is researched, and analysis hierarchy process is used to realize the multi-factors synthetic analysis and comparing plans. In the last part of this thesis, the feasibility and practicability of this application scheme are proved through the example.
