The path selection of transmission lines combines the specific situations of topographic and geomorphic conditions, surface features, and environment of the local area. The complex factors make the design work very difficult. The traditional way of transmission lines path selection is that, designers make the drawing on the map based on personal experience, and complete the first and final path selection in the scene. But this method cannot guarantee the timeliness and efficiency of Geographic information.Besides, Artificial design can hardly have comprehensive consideration of various types of geospatial information which makes it impossibly ensure the economy and scientific of the results. Therefore, it will be an inevitable trend for the design of transmission lines to have automatic path selection by the acquiring and processing of geographic information with modern technics via computers.First of all, this paper adopts GIS as the geographic information collection and analysis platform, classify and refine the elements that can possibly affects the path selection. Use expert rating and AHP to quantize and integrate complex geographic information. Build the geographic information model of transmission line design which is also the foundation of automatic selection of transmission line path.Based on cellular automata model and ant colony algorithm, considering the features of transmission line design, build automatic selection model of transmission line path, realizing the smart choice of computer for it. Heuristic search mechanism of artificial intelligence is added in the new model, where the local cost control and overall direction control can take both local and global optimum into account, and ant colony algorithm makes the search more quick and accurate.The new method apples C#2010 and ArcGis Engine is applied to develop the new method and its effectiveness is verified through examples.
