With the rapid development of geographic information system (GIS), it gradually becomes one of important factors taken into account for substation site selection. The paper firstly analysis the different requirements of geography information for site selections in planning period and construction period, and based on the analysis, the paper sets up mathematics models and come up with new solutions for the application of GIS in different period.Regarding site selection for planning period, the paper establishes a comprehensive site selection model with minimum objective function for sum of annual substation construction and operation cost, low voltage feeder construction costs and network loss expenses. Meanwhile, taking into account the geographic information, bring various types of geographic areas information into the evaluation model, which include areas not suitable for substation and other differentiated geographic areas affected substation construction cost information. Finally, the paper come up with utilizing Differential Evolution of Particle Swarm Optimizer (DEPSO) to solve the problem, DEPSO hybrid algorithm optimizes the PSO particle updating velocity and improves mutation strategy of DE, significantly enhanced global searching ability of the algorithm, while improving search efficiency. The test function and practical examples show that the algorithm and model have better effectiveness and practicality.Sites identified during planning period are in a relatively broad region, and substation construction needs to identify specific sites within the region identified during planning phase. Regarding site selection in construction period, this paper proposes an improved Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on two-stage evaluation system for preferred site. The first phase is to establish GIS based plots automatically sorting model, which will use improved AHP to sort plots automatically for selected areas based on GIS information read and processed by computer. The second stage is to establish a comprehensive evaluation model including filed survey information to combine field survey information with GIS information and using AHP to get recommended sites. The real life 220kV substation project site selection result shows the evaluation system is practical.The substation site selection model proposed by this paper, fully considered about different application mode of geographic information at different stages of the selection process, completed the full process selected from project planning to substation construction, combined theoretical model and algorithm with the actual engineering requirements to obtain good results.
