As a high performance ship, trimaran interests the shipbuilding world in recent years. Some advanced shipbuilding countries take a great deal of human and material resources on the trimaran research. In our country the related research work started late, although certain progress has been achieved, there is a great distance from the advanced shipbuilding countries in the research level, especially about the research on its performance. For the performance research of trimaran sailing in shallow waters, some advanced countries have put some efforts, in contrast with little made in our country. Accurate simulation of fluid field around trimaran and prediction of its resistance are the most crucial technical problems in design, performance improvement and hull form optimization .In recent years, quite some commercial CFD software appeared and got more and more application. Researchers and designers can reduce their workload and increase their work efficiency by using these commercial software. In this paper a reliable commercial CFD software FLUENT is introduced to simulate the viscous fluid field around the trimaran sailing in shallow waters. Through the numerical solution of fluid field and resistance of the trimaran model in different water depth and forward speeds the computational results are compared with experimental data. It demonstrates the computational accuracy and validity of software FLUENT for simulation of viscous fluid field of trimaran in shallow waters. The main work in this paper provides some foundation on the practical application of CFD code for performance research of trimaran.This paper makes an attempt to use software FLUENT for computation of viscous fluid field around trimaran sailing in shallow water and investigates the validity of this software. With the progress made in scientific research, satisfactory results would finally be achieved in the field of CFD application for trimaran resistance prediction.
