Trimaran and Pentamaran attract extensive attention in the field of the shipbuilding for some of the outstanding advantages of them over conventional mono-hulled ships. The trimaran and the pentamaran possess extraordinary developed potential in building the high performance commercial ships and the warships in the future. To research the hydrodynamic characteristics of the trimaran and the pentamaran, not only can improve their hydrodynamic performances, but also can promote the extensive application of them in production and operation.In this paper the popular commercial CFD software FLUENT was used to simulate the flow fields around the trimarans, and calculate the resistance of the trimarans, while the free surface were considered. The comparisons were made between the computed results and the experimental data, which show that the computed results accorded with model test, especially in low speed range. In addition, the hull resistance of the pentamarans at different velocities were calculated and were compared with those of the trimarans having the same displacement. The difference between the trimarans and the pentamarans in respect of resistance were found and the reasons were explained in the comparisons. Also the paper compared and analyzed the resistance acting on the hulls of the pentamarans, with different side-hull longitudinal positions.Through these researches, commercial CFD software FLUENT was shown to be applicable to numerical simulation and calculation on hydrodynamic characteristics of the multi-hull ship.
