In the condition of the currently ruthlessly competitive market, the technology and measures of rapid product research and development become enterprises' core competitive power. RE (reverse engineering) becomes one of the important comprised contents for contemporary advanced manufacturing technology, it is the important measure for rapid product design, RPM (rapid prototype manufacture) and AM (agility manufacture). In this dissertation, the research for RPM based on ICT (Industrial Computed Tomographic) images of the part with complicated interior and exterior shape is studied. The approach from ICT images to RPM is presented.At the present stage, the feasible process route is: start with part ICT slices images, data output for slices contours after digital image processing, then to create CAD 3D model and to create STL model further through currently commercial CAD reverse software, and input STL model into RPM machine to produce prototype for the RE part.In normal case, taking the efficiency and capability of RPM equipment into account, the distance between every two ICT slices images is more than 0.5 mm, thus, it needs to generate new slice image between slices before image processing ordinarily. 3D interpolation method based on the matched slices images is selected for this research project, and the interpolation result is good.The crux for image binarization is to define threshold valve. Two improved image binary processing methods are given based on the study on the principle and application scopes of several traditional methods, they can realize the binarization of ICT image better than the traditional methods. The 8-neighbour point arithmetic is a simple and effective method to extract the contours in slice image. In this dissertation, the author points out that it ought to eliminate the points of the traced contour and its adjacent points after completing a contour tracing in order to trace all the contours in slice image smoothly.A reverse engineering software is developed in Visual C++ for the need of this research project. During data output, the directory and name of the image file is defaulted as the saving directory and name of the output file, of course, the saving directory and name can be altered. Z valve of the output coordinate data can be acquired automatically from the information of image file name and the distance between every two slices during ICT scanning.
