Grey Space Of City

With a review of the background and history of grey space, and basis on the brief theories of commercial space, this article detailed studies on six significant examples of grey space in commercial buildings of shanghai, which are Jinling Road East, Shanghai Centre, Shanghai Nextage Shopping Centre, Metro-City Shopping Centre, Hong Kong New World Tower, Brilliance-Shimao International Plaza. On a standpoint of urban space, the examples of grey space are analyzed and compared in two aspects: the material characteristics, including space form and proportion, and the immaterial characteristics, including activity types and intensity. Then to sum up the relationship between grey space and urban space, which has great significance to the city.
