In the process of rapid urbanization, China’s public space face many problems such asthe lack of quantity and the inefficiency of use which do harm to public lives. In contrast,with the improvement of material level, people’s life of consumption keeps developing andurban commercial space is increasingly growing. The commercial street as a commonbusiness format, with both consumption and public recreational functions, avoids otherpublic spaces’ insufficiency, shows great vitality, can achieve the double-win to bothprivate and public, promote the sustainable development of urban space. So research oncommercial street public spaces is a response to the plight of the current public space, canprovide new opportunities for the renewal of the city.The thesis aiming at Jiefang road commercial street public space in Wuchang, usespeople’s activities and behaviors as the breakthrough point to study, by the method ofphenomenology. First of all, Jiefang road commercial street public space of the physicalenvironment was studied from three levels:the macro, meso and micro. Second, frompeople’s behaviors and activities in the public space of the different people and differenttime, the thesis studies the actual use of Jiefang road public space. Then, combined withthe former two, the thesis chooses two detailed cases to do correlation analysis of time,space, activity, to find out the influence of spatial and social factors. Finally the thesissums up the characteristics and problems of Jiefang road public space, and puts forwardthe relevant urban design strategies and methods. At the end of paper, for future domesticcommercial street urban design practice, some revelatory advices are given.
